What is the Bitcoin Halving?

The Bitcoin Halving is a pre-programmed event written into the Bitcoin protocol source code that occurs every 210,000 blocks (roughly every 4 years). During this event, the reward given to miners for validating blocks is reduced by exactly 50%. This mechanism limits the rate at which new Bitcoins are generated, reinforcing its supply cap of 21 million coins and rendering Bitcoin a deflationary financial asset.

Historical Reward Schedule

  • Genesis Block (2009): 50 BTC per block
  • 1st Halving (2012): 25 BTC per block
  • 2nd Halving (2016): 12.5 BTC per block
  • 3rd Halving (2020): 6.25 BTC per block
  • 4th Halving (2024): 3.125 BTC per block
  • 5th Halving (Est. 2028): 1.5625 BTC per block
